EH Mixtape: My Legs Are Sweatin’ Mama: The Life & Times of Sissy Davis

I was shuffling through iTunes this evening while working on some freelance stuff and came across the mix and, having never been at all happy with the cover art I made at the time, set out to draw up something new and improved. While I was at it, I figured I might as well re-share the mix as well. So that’s what I’m doing.
I originally assembled this mix back in ’06 for the now defunct music appreciation site Swoon, that I used to write for with Paige and Paul.
This mix was specifically for a mixtape challenge with Paige, where we selected a cinematic heroine and constructed a narrative mixtape soundtrack for their life. Paige chose Margot Tenenbaum, I chose Sissy Davis from Urban Cowboy. I envisioned this as a mix of Sissy’s favorite songs, that she’d have on endless loop in her truck tape player. I also tried to tie in some biographical narrative as well (pretentious, I know).
I think the rule was to try not to use songs from that movie’s original soundtrack, but I think we both cheated on that. That said, this mix contains plenty of cheesy 70′s California Country and AM Gold. Steer clear if that sort of stuff makes you nauseous.

O wow, I’d forgotten all about this. I liked the old cover, but this one is flat fantastic.
I never did make my mix for ‘Watts’ from Some Kind of Wonderful, but I’ve made plenty of eighties mixes since then and most of them would probably qualify.

This is such a cool idea. I wish I’d known about Swoon in its heyday. Surely such internetally gifted musicos such as y’all could manage some sort of archive hosted, oh, online somewhere? I’m pretty sure I have enough .mac space to host a herd of Swoons. Let’s talk…

Heh, I’ve got a database dump of the old site – it makes me sad to get into it though.
I should, at the very least, repost Margot’s mix.

I will mail you a xanax and a sword, Paige, if that’s what it takes…
And I’m guessing Margot’s mix is a little less AM golden? Perhaps some wristslitter melodies? Love to hear it, in any case…

Swoon was pretty awesome for the short time I knew about it.
This mix is beautiful – thanks for reposting, Aaron!

Hmm, maybe a new-and-improved Swoon could be a project for this winter…
