Endless Numbered Mixtape #11: Sonic Youth “Incinerate”

I sort of arbitrarily decided many years ago that I wasn’t going to have any interest in any Sonic Youth records other than Sister and Daydream Nation. I never had a good reason for it, nor could I explain why I would think their greatness would be contained only in those two albums. It’s just sort of how it worked out.
But now I may have to reconsider that idea and give 2006′s Rather Ripped a try, after hearing “Incinerate.” This is some classic Sonic Youth, just the way I like it.
It’s got that “I could’ve thought of that” guitar line that is easier to imagine writing than it is to actually write, and a Kim Gordon bassline that fits perfectly where the guitar doesn’t.

It’s good. I like. But I would attribute that to the group being adept musicians and great song writers. Most of what they do is decent. In the end, however, I gotta stick with Sister and Daydream Nation. They will never do anything that wonderful ever again.

“Pink Dream” was another great song off this album. Surprisingly, I’ve never listened to Sister – or a lot of other SY albums, for that matter. The only SY records I’ve spent any time with are Daydream Nation, Washing Machine, Sonic Nurse & Rather Ripped. So I guess I should check it out.
